We all know that North Korea is a placid workers’ paradise teeming with green fields, fish-filled streams, and labourers working together to resist international imperialist aggression. These are well known facts. But we didn’t know, until last week, about Sunan International Airport. Let’s explore!
It never occurred to me that North Korea would even have a non-military airport. I just assumed that if you wanted to shoot some hoops with your boy Kimmy Jong “Numero” Un that you would land a plane on an empty expressway wherever you wanted.
But no! There’s actually an airport servicing Pyongyang, and it is the home base of Air Koryo, voted the world’s worst airline. Nice! Sunan was built in the forties, and was at its busiest for few a weeks during the Korean War when the international criminal syndicate the United Nations occupied the area. Afterward it was flooded entirely when the United States bombed a nearby dam in order to kill children and repress workers.
Here are some scenes of the airport:
But my favourite by far is this delightful snack from an Air Koryo flight. For some reason some guy uploaded five minutes of himself surreptitiously filming an Air Koryo flight upon which he was a passenger. Nothing really interesting happens. Even weirder, though, is the fact that it has been watched over 600,000 times, including by me. Here are some screen shots of him unfurling his gourmet in flight meal.
This raises an interesting ethical question: can you waste food by choosing not to eat the disgusting offerings on the national carrier of a country whose people have to eat grass by the side of the road in order to survive their permanent famine economy?
The Daily Mail has an extensive account you can read here (and admittedly that food looks quite a bit better).
